New China-Sourced Footwear Business Model Targets Pakistan’s Small Entrepreneurs
ISLAMABAD: A new business model aimed at helping Pakistani entrepreneurs source footwear directly from Chinese manufacturers is being presented as an opportunity for small and emerging businesses looking to enter the footwear market without making large-scale investments.
The model was discussed during a recent business podcast featuring Rashid Mehmood, where the conversation focused on how Pakistani entrepreneurs could access Chinese footwear products, examine samples locally and purchase products in quantities suited to their businesses.
Unlike conventional import arrangements, where traders may need to travel to China, negotiate with manufacturers and purchase goods in large quantities, the model discussed in the podcast is based on providing access to factory-sourced products within Pakistan.
According to the speakers, the proposed opportunity can be explored with an investment starting from around Rs1 million.
Direct access to Chinese footwear
During the podcast, the participants displayed footwear samples that they said had been supplied directly by a Chinese factory.
The products included a variety of designs, colours and styles, with footwear for both men and women among the samples presented during the programme. The range included rubber footwear and jogger-style products intended for everyday use.
The speakers said the objective was to give prospective entrepreneurs an opportunity to physically examine the products before deciding whether to enter the business.
“Unless someone picks it up in their hand, they don’t have an idea about the comfort level,” the discussion noted, highlighting the importance of physical samples when assessing footwear products.
Lower entry barrier for new businesses
One of the central points discussed during the podcast was the capital normally required to source products directly from China.
The speakers said entrepreneurs who travel to China and purchase footwear in container quantities may require considerably higher investment, in addition to travel and other associated expenses.
Under the proposed model, however, entrepreneurs would be able to start with a smaller investment and select products according to their requirements.
The podcast cited Rs1 million as the minimum investment discussed for the footwear opportunity, while indicating that entrepreneurs could increase their purchases depending on their business requirements.
The model is therefore being positioned as an option for smaller traders and new entrepreneurs who may not yet have the financial capacity to undertake direct international sourcing themselves.
Quality remains a key consideration
Quality control was another major issue raised during the discussion.
The host questioned whether product quality could remain consistent as the business expanded and more customers became involved.
In response, the speakers said they intended to maintain quality standards by selecting products from the factory and checking them before they reached entrepreneurs.
They also argued that focusing on quality rather than simply offering cheaper products would be important for entrepreneurs seeking repeat customers and long-term business.
The speakers said they were specifically interested in supplying higher-quality products rather than compromising quality for short-term sales.
However, the podcast did not provide independent testing or certification documents for the products, and prospective buyers would need to conduct their own due diligence before investing.
Samples available for prospective buyers
The proposed arrangement also places emphasis on allowing potential entrepreneurs to inspect samples before making a business decision.
According to the discussion, interested individuals can contact the organisers, view the available products and assess their quality, design and suitability for the Pakistani market.
The speakers said different colours, designs and product varieties were available and that entrepreneurs could select products according to their target customers and business requirements.
This approach could be particularly relevant for smaller retailers, distributors and first-time entrepreneurs who want to test a product before committing to larger orders.
Opportunity extends beyond Islamabad
Although the podcast was recorded in Islamabad, the speakers said the proposed business opportunity was not restricted to the federal capital.
They said entrepreneurs from other parts of Pakistan could also approach them and arrange supplies according to their requirements.
The discussion also suggested that the model could accommodate both smaller entrepreneurs and businesses interested in larger-volume purchases.
Footwear only part of wider business initiative
The footwear initiative appears to be part of a broader effort to connect Pakistani entrepreneurs with products sourced from Chinese companies.
During the podcast, the speakers said they had received approaches from companies operating in different product categories. They specifically mentioned areas including solar-related products and cosmetics, suggesting that additional business opportunities could be introduced in the future.
The broader concept, as explained during the programme, is to act as a link between manufacturers and Pakistani entrepreneurs who may want to enter particular markets without dealing directly with overseas factories.
Entrepreneurs advised to assess business terms
While the proposed model could reduce some of the traditional barriers associated with international sourcing, entrepreneurs would still need to examine the commercial terms carefully before committing funds.
These include the actual purchase price, minimum order quantities, transportation costs, customs duties and taxes, delivery arrangements, payment terms, product replacement policies and potential retail margins.
The podcast discussed quality checks and the possibility of dealing with damaged products, but detailed contractual terms for returns and replacements were not set out during the programme.
The speakers ultimately invited interested entrepreneurs to examine the available samples and make their own assessment of the opportunity.
For Pakistan’s growing community of small traders and aspiring entrepreneurs, the model represents another emerging route towards accessing imported consumer products without having to establish a direct sourcing operation in China.
The podcast concluded with an invitation for interested individuals to contact the organisers for further information and examine the products before deciding whether to pursue the business opportunity.
