Hantavirus Outbreak Prompts Global Health Alert as French Authorities Quarantine Cruise Ship Over Separate Gastroenteritis Crisis

BORDEAUX, France & ATLANTIC OCEAN – International health authorities are managing two distinct maritime health crises this week, as a deadly hantavirus cluster triggers a multi-country warning from the CDC, while French officials have confined over 1,700 passengers on a separate British cruise ship due to a widespread gastroenteritis outbreak.

In southwestern France, local authorities have temporarily prevented 1,233 passengers and 514 crew members aboard the UK-operated Ambition cruise ship from disembarking in Bordeaux. The quarantine was imposed after nearly 50 individuals exhibited symptoms consistent with acute gastrointestinal infection, including vomiting and diarrhea . The vessel, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, is carrying mostly British and Irish nationals.

The situation escalated following the death of a 92-year-old passenger onboard while the ship was near Brest. While the cause of death has yet to be established by a coroner, the operator confirmed a “number of guests and crew” are displaying symptoms of gastrointestinal illness . The Gironde prefecture stated that three passengers have been isolated in their cabins and that enhanced sanitation protocols have been activated. Officials have stressed there is “no reason” to link this incident to the hantavirus situation unfolding on a different vessel .

The Hantavirus Crisis
While the Ambition deals with gastroenteritis, the global medical community remains on high alert regarding a confirmed cluster of hantavirus linked to the expedition ship MV Hondius.

According to a Health Alert Network advisory issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the outbreak involves the Andes virus, a strain of hantavirus unique in its ability to spread from person-to-person through close, prolonged contact . As of May 8, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported eight cases (six confirmed, two suspected) associated with the MV Hondius, including three deaths .

The MV Hondius departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, traveling across the South Atlantic. The CDC notes that hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), caused by the Andes virus, has a case fatality rate of approximately 38% among symptomatic patients. Unlike the gastrointestinal issues on the Ambition, hantavirus attacks the lungs, with late symptoms including coughing and shortness of breath . There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine available for the virus, though research is ongoing .

Distinct Illnesses
Health experts are keen to differentiate between the two events. Gastroenteritis, often called the “stomach flu,” is highly contagious but typically non-life-threatening, causing inflammation of the stomach and intestines. In contrast, hantavirus is a severe respiratory disease with a high mortality rate that requires airborne infection isolation room precautions in healthcare settings .

The CDC has dispatched a team to the Canary Islands, Spain, to meet the MV Hondius and assess exposure risks for American passengers, while French health teams remain onboard the Ambitionin Bordeaux pending the results of medical tests to definitively identify the pathogen causing the gastrointestinal symptoms
