WWE Latest: Backlash 2026 Go-Home SmackDown Delivers Returns, Title Matches, and a Shocking Pin

The road to Backlash 2026 concluded Friday night with a packed edition of WWE SmackDown in Jacksonville, Florida.

The May 8 episode served as the final stop before Saturday’s premium live event in Tampa, featuring championship action, several surprising returns, and a major match announcement for next month’s Clash in Italy.

Backlash 2026: The Card Takes Shape

The 2026 edition of Backlash takes place tonight, May 9, 2026, at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida.  Here is what fans can expect based on Friday’s go-home show:

World Heavyweight Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jacob Fatu

Jacob Fatu kicked off SmackDown with an intense promo, declaring he will take the title at Backlash. He addressed his family history, stating that Roman Reigns was always labeled “the future” while no one in his own family believed in him. “Now Roman wants me to fall in line,” Fatu said. “Hell no.”

Expert Buzz: Despite recent speculation about Roman Reigns’ schedule, reports indicate there is “no concern internally” about his status with WWE. Reigns has been a consistent presence since winning the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42, and he is advertised for multiple upcoming events including Clash in Italy on May 31.

United States Championship: Trick Williams (c) vs. Sami Zayn

One of the more unusual segments of the night saw Trick Williams host a “funeral” for the Gingerbread Man—complete with a casket and video tributes. Sami Zayn crashed the proceedings, criticizing the segment and declaring that main eventing SmackDown “used to mean something.” Zayn attacked Williams and posed with the U.S. Title, only for the casket to open, revealing rapper Lil Yachty, who helped Williams stand tall to close the show.

SmackDown Highlights: Returns, UpSets, and Big Announcements

Talla Tonga Pins a Champion

In a shocking result, Talla Tonga defeated WWE Tag Team Champion Damian Priest in singles action. Tama Tonga returned during the match, interfering alongside Solo Sikoa to create a distraction. Despite Priest’s orders for R-Truth to stay backstage, Truth rushed to help—only to become a liability. The MFTs ultimately prevailed, with Talla pinning the champion one night before their title match.

Major Returns

Four Superstars made their returns to WWE television on SmackDown:

  • Jade Cargill – Appeared for the first time since WrestleMania 42, attacking Rhea Ripley during the six-woman tag team main event
  • Michin – Returned alongside B-Fab to attack Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss
  • B-Fab – Completed the trio of returns

Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther Official for Clash in Italy

Paul Heyman appeared during Cody Rhodes’ promo, revealing he owed Gunther a favor and had worked out a contract for an Undisputed WWE Championship match. Cody and Gunther brawled, with Rhodes ultimately standing tall, declaring he is “easy to find, but hard to beat.”

The match is set for the Clash in Italy premium live event on May 31, 2026

Roman Reigns’ Schedule: A Clerical Error?

Recent internet speculation suggested tension between Roman Reigns and WWE after he was removed from advertised June dates. However, multiple reports indicate this was a “clerical error” rather than any issue. Reigns is still “factored into WWE creative in a huge way” and remains under no internal concern from TKO management.

John Cena’s Backlash Role

John Cena will make an appearance at Backlash tonight. While some speculated he might announce a future WrestleMania location, sources indicate the announcement will likely involve Club WWE—a new fan membership program with “high expectations” internally. Attaching Cena to the initiative is seen as a key move for its success.

The Cuts and Free Agency: What You Need to Know

Recent Roster Changes

WWE recently released several Superstars, including Kairi Sane—a move many found surprising given her ongoing storyline with Asuka and Iyo Sky. Reports suggest Sane could return as soon as Backlash. The cuts appear focused on talent without major creative plans, reportedly clearing space for NXT call-ups.

Brock Lesnar Officially Moved to Alumni Section

Brock Lesnar has been moved to the alumni section of the WWE website following his apparent retirement at WrestleMania 42, where he left his gloves and boots in the ring after losing to Oba Femi. Lesnar retires as a seven-time WWE Champion, three-time Universal Champion, and the man who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania 30.

Big E Staying with WWE

Despite New Day members Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods departing the company (reportedly choosing to leave rather than accept pay cuts), Big E is expected to remain with WWE in his role as a premium live event Kickoff Show host. He is “viewed internally as a valuable presence.”

Aleister Black Status

Aleister Black’s future remains unclear following his WWE release. While reports suggested talks with AEW, that promotion has denied the claims. For now, Black remains a free agent.

Looking Ahead: Night of Champions (Not King & Queen of the Ring)

Originally announced as the “King & Queen of the Ring” tournament event scheduled for May 27 in Saudi Arabia, WWE has since rebranded the show to Night of Champions. This marks the first time a Night of Champions event will be held outside the United States. The change was reportedly a “creative choice,” not a Vince McMahon decision.
